Haus Gatterer and Totally Nordic, Alan Eason, Obertilliach

Haus Gatterer is situated in Obertilliach (affectionately known as ‘the wooden village’) in the Lesachtal  valley, 1,450 metres above sea level between the Gailtal Alps (Lienz Dolomites) in the North and the Carnic Alps in the South. There are a variety of rooms in the guest house of different sizes but I was staying in a very basic but comfortable room with ensuite, small hob and TV/wifi etc for 25 euros/per night. Spectre was filmed in the mountains behind the guest house in 2014.  I was doing a beginners cross country training camp with Alan Eason, a former British National Cross Country skier. He is one of the best coaches I have had (in any sport) and his excellent instruction, calm manner and ability to simplify technique into easy to follow steps allowed me to pick up the basics and hopefully puts me a step closer to completing the Engadin ski marathon in March 2017!

We loved: The traditional Austrian village, the warm welcome from the locals, the international biathlon centre with brilliant cross country tracks minutes from the door, the incredible views from every direction and the superb coaching from Alan at Totally Nordic.

We’d come back for: The cross country trails, the peace and quiet, the very ‘local’ feel of the working village, to try out the alpine skiing, and the apfelfritter from the village bakery!

Where we ate: Breakfast: self catering, Lunch: ‘Im Zentrum’, the cafe/bistro next to the biathlon centre (delicious homemade food and not expensive at all, (particularly compared to the French Alps!), Dinner: self catering but I heard the pizzeria in the village was very good. There is also a restaurant run by a michelin star chef in the village which offers a tasting menu at a very reasonable price.

Best For: Outdoorsy types, walkers, adventurers, cross country skiers, biathletes, mountain biking (summer)

Public Transport: Bus from Innsbruck (2 hours) or train from Innsbruck to Tassenbach. There is an excellent local taxi service: Heinz Bodner: +43 664 16 18 723 for the 15 minute transfer to the village. Alan very kindly offers his own taxi service for guests booked onto the Totally Nordic course.

NB Do not do what I did and take the train to Taxenbach instead of Tassenbach which is entirely the wrong side of Austria!
